Three bidders have been given until late May, 2012 to price the second stage of a two stage tender for Barnsley Metropolitan Council. A revised development agreement for Marketplace Barnsley, the new name for the town's Barnsley Markets Project, has been signed by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and the 1249 Regeneration Partnership LLP.
This revised development agreement replaces the one signed in March 2006, which also include Yorkshire Forward as a key partner. Following the government's decision to abolish regional development agencies, the council decided to acquire the former Yorkshire Forward assets, which form a component part of the land required to deliver the scheme. In doing so, the council has assumed the role of sole sponsor to the project.
The revised Marketplace Barnsley will create a new Central retail core for the town anchored by Debenhams department store, an Odeon seven-screen cinema, 35 retail and leisure units as well as ample car parking for shoppers. There will also be a new market hall to house the renowned and successful indoor market.
