Kier looks set to keep its housing repairs and maintenance contract with Sheffield City Council. The council has chosen the firm as preferred bidder for the £100m deal against competition from three other companies. Kier’s current contract with the council is due to expire in March.Kier and the council will now agree the details of the contract and the new deal should be signed in mid-December.

Morgan Sindall has seen “early indications” of of market improvement in fit-out, but warned of upward pressure on material and subcontractor costs to come. In its interim management statement for the third quarter, the firm said its order book was £3.3bn, up 6 per cent from the half year results.

Balfour Beatty will continue to shift its business mix away from major infrastructure into regional work, the firm said this week, due to a “weak” visible pipeline. The firm said: “In the major projects business, there continues to be an absence of large infrastructure projects. The visible pipeline looks weak, and we see little prospect for change in the next couple of years. We therefore anticipate a continuing shift in our business mix away from major infrastructure and into regional work.”
