Contracts are due to be awarded imminently across a range of construction sectors according to Glenigan’s top construction tenders in the UK research despite concerns about the wider economy.

Infrastructure work is expected to keep the industry busy over the coming months and the biggest contract currently out to tender is the £150 million Carlisle Southern Link Road (Project ID: 18223437).

The tender return date has been extended but a decision is due by the spring as construction of the plan to build 8km of single carriageway between junction 42 of the M6 and the A595 is due to start in June.

Social housing boom

Major schemes in other sectors where a main contract award is due soon include the £80 million second phase of a designer outlet at Cannock in Staffordshire for a trio of clients, McArthurGlen, U+I Group and Rioja Developments (Project ID: 15067377).

Glenigan’s industry research shows that the tender return date was extended from December 16 to January 20. With construction work expected to start in March, a decision on the successful contractor should be imminent.

Bids were due back on January 19 for the £15 million York House residential scheme at Bedminster in Bristol (Project ID: 21518736). With work due to start in February, a winner should be announced soon.

Tenders are due to be returned at the end of January on a £17.5 million extension of the Stephenson Memorial Hall in Chesterfield, Derbyshire (Project ID: 19421284). A decision by the client, Chesterfield Borough Council, on the winner should be soon as work is also scheduled to start in March.

More opportunities

Contracts should be awarded presently on a number of other major projects where tenders have been already returned and a construction start is due this spring.

Bids are back for the contract for a £15.2 million expansion of a terminal building at Stanford-Le-Hope, Essex, for DP World and London Gateway Port (Project ID: 21114109). Work is expected sometime from February onwards.

Plans for a £42 million refurbishment and extension of Adelaide House in the City of London is scheduled to start in May according to Glenigan’s industry analysis (Project ID: 20174994).

Contract awards on these major projects should provide a stimulus for the industry in the coming months.
