Underlying value of construction projects starting on site. (Excludes individual projects of more than £100 million and framework agreements).
The North East of England is suffering from a weak private sector and reductions in government spending that are adding to the regions long term problems such as the decline of manufacturing industries. However, the construction industry is seeing modest improvements in the level of work coming through the development pipeline. Infrastructure output in the first three quarters of last year was up 60% compared to 2011’s levels and industrial construction output was up 67% for the same period. Glenigan tracked increases in planning approvals and the value of contracts awarded last year. After last year’s dip in the value of starts we expect a modest improvement in project starts during 2013 and 2014.
The North East consists of the following Counties: Cleveland, County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear.
