During 2013 new project starts in the Province rose for the first time since 2009, with the value of underlying starts growing by 16% albeit from a low base. Whilst initial estimates have recorded a sharp acceleration on growth during 2014, this is expected to be short-lived with the flow of project starts retrenching this year.
Nevertheless the overall outlook remains positive. The value of underlying detailed planning approvals has been rising over the last two years, pointing to a strengthening development pipeline. The rise in planning approvals has been driven by increases in industrial, private housing, education and health sector projects; pointing to improved business confidence and increased government investment.
