Yorkshire & the Humber is, like most of the UK, suffering from the dual pressures of a struggling private sector and shrinking public sector funding. During 2010 the region enjoyed 12% growth in the underlying value of project starts, in part thanks to high levels of education and health work.
The cuts to government funding mean that these projects dried up over 2011, while the private sector hasn’t been able to recover sufficiently to compensate. We have seen a growth in industrial and private housing starts this year, but it has not been enough to stem the decline.
However, an increased flow of private sector planning approvals points to increased opportunities in the region. While we forecast continued overall decline in the value of project starts over 2012 and 2013, the type of work coming through will change in the period.
Yorkshire and Humber consists of the following Counties: Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire.
