The last two years have seen a steady recovery in construction activity in Yorkshire and the Humber. 2012 saw the beginnings of a rise, with project starts increasing by 5%. This has now begun to feed through into output growth in the second half of 2013. Starts rose by 6% last year and approvals by 12% and the region looks set for further stable growth.
Shrinking public sector funding put construction activity in the region under pressure, and public sector work will remain weak, and potentially decline even further in the coming year. However a rejuvenating private sector is now fuelling growth, with improvements in the commercial sectors evident in the ONS output figures and Glenigan data on project starts and planning approvals. The private residential sector is already in growth mode, and workloads will continue to improve in line with economic conditions.
Yorkshire and Humber consists of the following Counties: Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire.
